This is a form of finance that can be used to pay for initial training for a car driving licence (B licence) or motorbike driving licence (A1 or A2 licence). This is a zero-interest loan, the interest on which is paid by the government. The maximum loan is €1,200 (plus €300 for additional training). The loan is repayable in monthly instalments of up to €30.
To qualify, you must be aged between 15 and 25 on the date you sign a training contract with a partner driving school, regardless of your situation, provided the financial institution accepts the applicant's application.
The "one euro a day driving licence" loan must be used exclusively to finance initial training or, if you fail the practical test, additional training.
The "one-euro-a-day driving licence" loan for initial training can only be awarded once to the same beneficiary.
These courses must be aimed at obtaining either an A1, A2 or B category driving licence.
To apply, you need to go to a driving school that has been awarded the government label "quality of training in driving schools" and has signed an agreement with the government to take part in the "one-euro-a-day driving licence" scheme. There are three ways of doing this, depending on your financial capacity and the discussions you have had with the lending institution:
- provide proof of income sufficient to repay the €30 per month;
- or you guarantee the repayment of your loan by providing a guarantor;
- or you take out a joint loan (i.e. the young person and a third party borrow together) to increase the chances of getting a positive response from the lending institution.
If you are a minor (in the case of early learning to drive), your parents will borrow the car on your behalf.
